Here we share information on breastfeeding that we feel will be beneficial for mummies!
Recommendations for Breastfeeding periods
"WHO and UNICEF recommend that children initiate breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life – meaning no other foods or liquids are provided, including water. Infants should be breastfed on demand – that is as often as the child wants, day and night. No bottles, teats or pacifiers should be used. From the age of 6 months, children should begin eating safe and adequate complementary foods while continuing to breastfeed for up to two years of age or beyond." - https://www.who.int/health-topics/breastfeeding#tab=tab_2"
The American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months, and then continued breastfeeding until at least age 1 year for optimal health."- https://www.jabfm.org/content/29/1/139"
(Health Production Board ) "If possible, mothers should breastfeed their infant for as long as they feel comfortable with it. The recommendation is to breastfeed for at least 6 months, and if possible to continue till their infant is 2 years old." - Feeding your baby: Breastfeeding
Based on the recommendations of the various bodies above, 6 months on solely breastmilk would be a good baseline to follow and if mum would love to continue, aiming for up to a year and beyond!
